Preventive Dentistry

Modern dentistry takes a preventive approach so problems can be spotted before they worsen and may end up needing more involved, costly treatment. That’s why it is important to attend regular check-ups with the dentist and hygienist so they can swiftly deal with any issues including:

  • Cavities and tooth decay
  • Signs of gum disease
  • Changes in the mouth that could indicate cancer
  • Tarter build-up

They can also offer advice on dental care and help you address any problem areas.

Oral hygiene tips

Follow these tips for a happy, healthy mouth:

  • Brush teeth at least twice a day.
  • Clean between your teeth with floss or special brushes.
  • Give up smoking, as it can cause problems with your teeth and gums.
  • If you can’t get to a toothbrush, chew sugar-free gum or rinse your mouth with water.
  • Cut down on sugary foods.
  • Limit your intake of acidic items, such as wine and fizzy drinks.
  • Take care when eating very hard or chewy foods.

Look after little teeth

  • Make regular brushing a part of your child’s daily routine.
  • Supervise brushing until youngsters are old enough to clean their teeth alone.
  • Limit sugary drinks and snacks.
  • Encourage them to eat calcium-rich foods such as milk, cheese and yoghurt.
  • Register your child with a dentist from birth.
  • Bring them for regular check-ups from around six months old.

Preventing problems with fissure sealants

As fissures in the chewing surfaces of the back teeth are very narrow and difficult to keep clean, bacteria can start to collect and cause problems. A fissure sealant is a clear, plastic coating that can be applied to these vulnerable areas to prevent bacteria from entering. They are particularly suitable for young permanent teeth when they first start to emerge.

Application is simple and there is no need for an anaesthetic or any drilling. We clean the tooth, apply the sealant and then harden this using a special UV light.

Fissure sealants can last for many years, as long as they are looked after and checked regularly.
